The temperature will drop on Day 4, so prepare to turn the Heater on in the Cookhouse, and leave the Generator on all-day. That being said I do believe you can play the 2nd instalment, when it comes out, without playing the first and not feel left in the dust by the story. Though game play / visuals are expected to be further developed in the 2nd instalment you will still miss out on the massive amount of pure gold in the form of story driven content. Frostpunk will show you its own world and write about the people in it in every scenario. 
Thus unlike CoD, football, basketball etc games which yes you have absolutely no reason to ever play the prior instalment.
